Hoy me ha interesado …
… la portada del ejemplar de The Economist que acabo de recibir.
Nada de lo que yo escriba puede sustituir a una lectura atenta de la revista. Pero no resisto la tentación de transcribir un párrafo:
«With its clean lines and intuitive user interface, the humble loo transformed the lives of billions of people. And it wasn’t just modern sanitation that sprang from late-19th and early-20th-century brains: they produced cars, planes, the telephone, radio and antibiotics. Modern science has failed to make anything like the same impact, and this is why a growing band of thinkers claim that the pace of innovation has slowed».
No es obligatorio estar de acuerdo. Como tampoco con la tesis, habitual en The Economist, de que:
«The biggest danger is government. When government was smaller, innovation was easier.»
Hay, de cualquier forma, materia para la reflexión. Porque no éste el único artículo en la misma línea que he recogido últimamente en mi archivo de noticias. Por ejemplo:
- «Innovation Is Doing Little for Incomes» (New York Times): «It seems that we are coming up with ideas that benefit relatively small numbers of people, compared with the broad-based advances of earlier decades«.
- «A Capitalist’s Dilemma, Whoever Wins on Tuesday» (New York Times): «America is generating many fewer empowering innovations than in the past«.
- «When «Creative Destruction» Destroys More than It Creates» (Harvard Business Review).
Supongo que más de un ilustrado-TIC descalificará (si no lo ha hecho ya) estos argumentos. Sin tomar partido en una cuestión que no debería ser objeto de demagogia fácil, propongo como reto una cita de «Race Against The Machine: How the Digital Revolution is Accelerating Innovation, Driving Productivity, and Irreversibly Transforming Employment and the Economy«, de autores nada sospechosos de ludismo.
«While digital progress grows the overall economic pie, it can do so while leaving some people, or even a lot of them, worse off.«
No creo que hoy sea el último día que me interese por este asunto. Si así es, aquí lo contaré.
